What is a Therapy Dog? A Therapy Dog is a trained and licensed dog which is used to assist people during therapy. Therapy Dogs visit nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions and wherever they can be beneficial. Residents are encouraged to pet, love, brush and enjoy the Therapy Dog while they visit.
In 2008, there were over 19,000 registered Therapy Dogs residing in all 50 states and in Canada.
Before certification to serve as a Therapy Dog, dogs and handlers must pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test and meet certain requirements. All Therapy Dog Handlers must submit a detailed resume of their dog and therapy activities to TDI and must abide by TDI’s rules and guidelines.
